Three Tips To Prevent House Fires

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

Believe it or not, a house fire occurs every 24 seconds here in America! Therefore, Preventing a fire in your home is very important, and the good news is that most common fires are preventable by following some standard safety practices. Here are three tips to prevent a house fire:

DON’T OVERLOAD ELECTRICAL PLUGS AND CORDS.

Be careful with your electrical and extension cords; plugging too many items in one outlet can overload the circuitry, while using damaged cables can also create a hazard. Make sure your extension cords are not overloading your system and that they are carrying the recommended electrical load. If you are not sure what the proper load should be, check the documentation that comes with your equipment; manufacturers must provide this information. Also, make sure to purchase the right kind of cords for indoor or outdoor use.

BE ATTENTIVE WHILE COOKING.

Never leave food unattended while you are cooking. Mishaps in the kitchen are among the top causes of home fires. Look out for burning food can also cause smoke damage. If you aren’t in the kitchen, turn off your appliances and be especially cautious when cooking with grease or oils. If a stovetop fire does occur, make sure you know the proper procedure to put the fire out; for example, using water on a grease fire will cause the flames to explode across the area, creating an even more dangerous situation.

NEVER LEAVE A FLAME ALONE.

Who doesn’t love a fragrant candle? It can be tempting to light one and let it burn for a long time to add a pleasant scent to your home, but you must remember to blow out the flame when you leave. Ensure you extinguish a fire in the fireplace or your fire pit the same way. A spark or a falling piece of burning wood can start a house fire in a matter of seconds, so eliminate such a risk by practicing smart fire safety.
